Fall Skincare : How to change your routine

Fall is known as the “BitterSweet” time of the year when the temperature drops outside, it begins to get a lot cooler and our lifestyle demands a few changes to accommodate the new season.

Most of us suffer from Dry or Dehydrated skin and for some a combination of both. Dry skin is the decrease in oil production from our sebaceous glands while dehydrated skin has an increase in trans-epidermal water loss, making it difficult to retain water.

Your morning and night-time skincare routine will undoubtedly change to your environment in order to maintain healthy skin throughout the colder months.

Morning Routine

  • It is best to wash your face with cold or warm water to preserve your skin’s natural hydrating oils, too much heat can overtime damage your skin, cause early wrinkles and may irritate and dry out your skin.
  • Skip the harsh foaming and exfoliating cleansers for a cleansing milk or oil cleanser. Only exfoliate with a gentle cleanser two times a week to remove dry, flaky, dead skin.
  • If you use a toner just make sure it doesn’t have Alcohol or Methanol /Methyl ,use toners which are formulated with humectants to attract and hold in water such as Glycerin, Aloe Vera liquid, Butylene Glycol.
  • Serums are perfect for a number of reasons, if you have acne and clogged pores, dark spots, hyper-pigmentation or uneven skin tone, you may need to add a serum to your routine. Serums which contains Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol which we all know is perfect for anti-aging, Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin.
  • Your moisturizer should also be thick enough to hold moisture in the skin, choosing one with great humectants will prevent your skin from becoming dry during the day.
  • Do not forget your sunscreen, it may not be sizzling hot outside but you still need to protect your skin from the harmful sun’s ultraviolet rays.

Night-time Skincare

  • I recommend using a chemical exfoliant for your skin such as Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Citric and Malic Acids. These exfoliants are acids that get rid of dead skin cells, with regular use they can help reverse skincare issues like hyper pigmentation.
You must follow up with your Serums immediately after to start bringing back the moisture in your skin. I suggest applying your serums when your skin is still a little damp.
  • Face oils are great for many reasons, natural face oils will help to maintain a healthy balance, locks in moisture, they are great for fine lines and wrinkles, it gives your skin a smooth, soft feeling and appearance.
  • In the nighttime is when you need to use an intensive overnight sleeping cream and not just for your face, your overall skin, hand and cuticles needs to stay moisturized.
  • Lips can get dry and chapped when it’s cold, it can be difficult to find the perfect lip balm, avoid the ones which contains Phenol, Menthol and Petroleum. Beeswax, Coconut oil, Vitamin E oil and Honey are just a few of the natural ingredients you should look for when choosing a lip balm.
  • If you are able to invest in a humidifier for your bedroom, it would be a perfect investment to add to the health of your skin. Humidifiers adds moisture to the air, it is effective for treating dryness of the nose, lips , throat and skin.
